Anyone who thinks about water supply will eventually almost automatically also consider organic waste and natural cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first part of this series was about the question of whether we would even be able to compete in Baja. <a href=\"https:\/\/la-casa-pacifica.com\/en\/dinge-ueber-die-wir-heute-anders-nachdenken-brauchen-wir-auf-der-baja-wirklich-einen-geschirrspueler\/\">need a dishwasher<\/a>, In the second part, we dealt with <a href=\"https:\/\/la-casa-pacifica.com\/en\/wasser-auf-der-baja-warum-wir-anders-denken\/\">Our water supply<\/a> occupational. This time it\u2019s about what remains at the end: waste, compost and the natural cycles on our property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is for this very reason that we have begun to take a more serious look at the subject of compost. Not because we want to follow a trend, but because we want to understand which solutions are truly useful under the conditions on Baja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it is precisely where much of the infrastructure is not functioning properly that the question naturally arises: What happens to the things that remain after the daily routine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waste takes on a different meaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Austria, much was well organized: waste was separated, collected, and disappeared from our daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Baja, we see things differently. Not because we suddenly want to live completely differently, but because the consequences become much more visible. Every bag of trash has to go somewhere eventually, and every package that you bring home remains as waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why we are focusing more today on questions like: What can we avoid? What can we reuse multiple times? What can be further processed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not about being perfect or living completely without waste \u2013 that would probably be neither realistic nor our goal under our circumstances. But we want to make more conscious decisions and understand the options we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Composting in a dry region \u2013 does it even work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the questions that particularly concerned us was the topic of compost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When thinking about compost, many probably think of wet gardens, lots of rain, and densely populated regions. Therefore, we wanted to know: Does it work in a dry environment like on Baja as well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research has shown that yes, it is possible. Compost is also commonly used in regions like Arizona or New Mexico. The crucial point is not that it is hot and dry, but that the conditions are adjusted accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A shady location, sufficient moisture, and the right mix of different materials are crucial. Special purchased bacteria or complex additives are not needed \u2013 nature already provides the necessary microorganisms. They are found in soil, plant material, and organic residues and perform the actual work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classical compost or Bokashi?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more we have dealt with the issue, the clearer it became: There is not just one solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classic compost has many advantages for us. It works with natural cycles, requires no regular additions, and fits well with our desire to live as independently as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, we find Bokashi interesting. Bokashi works differently from conventional compost: Instead of simply rotting organic waste, it is fermented using microorganisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One point we find particularly interesting here: while in traditional composting certain kitchen waste is rather unsuitable, with Bokashi it is also possible to process things that would otherwise be difficult \u2013 for example, meat scraps, fish bones or bones. This is a major advantage, especially if you want to throw as little as possible away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our plan: try it out and combine it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We therefore do not want to commit ourselves to a single system from the very beginning. We will probably try both methods and see which one works best under our conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the classic compost will become the basis for garden waste and vegetable residues, while bokashi will become a supplement for kitchen waste that would otherwise be more difficult to dispose of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with many other decisions regarding our property, here too we are not looking for the most complicated or technically sophisticated solution, but one that works consistently and fits into our daily routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Natural cycles instead of simply throwing away<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What particularly fascinates us about this topic is the idea that something that is normally considered waste can be transformed into something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kitchen waste is not simply disposed of; it can become part of a natural cycle again. From organic material comes compost, which in turn creates fertile soil \u2013 and this soil will play an important role on our property later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, the topic of compost has another important meaning: On our property, we want to grow as much of our own food as possible in the future, and good soil is one of the most important foundations for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially in a dry area like Baja, fertile soil is not a given. Compost can help improve soil quality, store moisture for longer periods, and provide our plants with essential nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, with our donkey \u2013 we call him Burro \u2013 we will have another natural source of valuable fertilizer. His dung can, together with the compost, help to build the soil and provide our plants with better conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, we don\u2019t expect everything to grow automatically with this.
