{"id":1621,"date":"2026-08-27T09:09:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T18:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/la-casa-pacifica.com\/?p=1621"},"modified":"2026-08-27T09:09:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T18:09:16","slug":"wasserfilter-fuer-unser-haus-auf-der-baja","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/la-casa-pacifica.com\/en\/wasserfilter-fuer-unser-haus-auf-der-baja\/","title":{"rendered":"Water on the Baja \u2013 why we suddenly think about it all differently"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we lived in Austria, we never really thought about water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You turn on the tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water comes out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where it comes from, how it is processed, and the route it has taken to get to the tap are not really of interest to anyone in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here in Baja California Sur, that's a bit different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we need to know, <strong>where our water comes from, how we get it, and what happens to it afterwards.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s exactly why water is now a pretty big issue here. <a href=\"https:\/\/la-casa-pacifica.com\/en\/hausbau-in-der-wildnis-teil-2\/\">Planning our house<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our water comes from the Pipa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our future house will be fully supplied with water from two large water tanks each holding 10,000 liters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The water is delivered by a Pipa and stored in our tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will continue to buy our own drinking water separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The water from the tanks is therefore used for the entire household supply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Showers<\/li><li>Washing<\/li><li>Toilets<\/li><li>Cleaning<\/li><li>Garden<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And of course, everything you need in everyday life for water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We only want to take one additional step in the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because that\u2019s where we want to filter the water from our tank in addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because we assume that the water is fundamentally bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because we simply like to have an extra level of safety when it comes to something as important as water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The water in Baja isn't the same everywhere.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our research we quickly realized that you can\u2019t even <strong>\u201ethe water on the Baja\u201c<\/strong> can speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Baja California Sur is vast and has different groundwater sources and supply systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And even within a region, the water supply can be organized differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That also means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Not every pipa has to necessarily deliver the same water.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it is precisely this question that interests us especially regarding our own house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because we want to know at some point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where does the water that our Pipa brings actually come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the water in La Paz really bad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was one of the questions we asked ourselves during our research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the answer is more interesting than we initially thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The municipal water in La Paz is treated and controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In published studies from COEPRIS in 2024, six samples from storage tanks with already treated water were examined. The results were within the applicable parameters of the Mexican drinking water standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We actually found that interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it shows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can't just say that the water in Mexico is bad or not drinkable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would be far too general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, even though a flawless water sample from a supply system does not automatically mean that the water at every private tap has the same quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because there's still quite a long way to go between now and then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Treatment \u2192 Pipeline network \u2192 Storage tank \u2192 Home installation \u2192 Water tap<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it is this path that we need to look at a little differently here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our chain looks like this<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At our house, it will look something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Source \/ Well<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p wp-block-paragraph\">\u2193<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Home installation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">\u2193<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Faucet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that brings up a point that we probably wouldn't have even thought about earlier:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>the water tanks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because water at the source can be perfectly fine and still become contaminated later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, during transport or during storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A story that made us think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father of a friend of ours has been living on the Canary Islands for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He became seriously ill there because a dead animal had gotten into the water tank and the water was contaminated as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, that doesn\u2019t mean that something like this will happen to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the story has stayed with us in our minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because suddenly you realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A water tank is not just a large container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you store water in it for a long period of time, you must also ensure that this tank is clean, closed, and protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is exactly why we at our own house not only want to pay attention to this, <strong>what goes into the tanks<\/strong>, but also on the, <strong>what comes out of it again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we have discovered about the Pipas in the vicinity of our future home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our area, water is sometimes delivered via pipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have found that Pipa operators sometimes replace the well if there are problems with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we haven't been able to find out clearly so far, however:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>All the private wells in the area get their water from the same source.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that's exactly what we want to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because for us it would of course be interesting to know from which well or spring our Pipa actually draws its water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then we could also get much more detailed information about the water quality of this specific source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We don't want to filter all the house water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, when planning our house, it was quickly clear to us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We don't need a huge system that turns every liter of water in the tank into drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We buy our drinking water separately anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we would like to process the tank water in the kitchen as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why we are planning a <strong>two-stage filtration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first filter should be installed at the house entrance or after the tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is said to remove sand, soil, rust, sediment and other larger particles from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This not only makes the water cleaner, but also protects our entire home installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The filter is designed for high flow rates and is therefore generally suitable for complete household use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is not supposed to filter out everything in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is, rather, the first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And then comes the kitchen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A second, finer filter is to be installed in the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this filtered connection has several functions for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The water should be for <strong>Cooking<\/strong> used as water for the animals and also for our <a href=\"https:\/\/la-casa-pacifica.com\/en\/dinge-ueber-die-wir-heute-anders-nachdenken-brauchen-wir-auf-der-baja-wirklich-einen-geschirrspueler\/\"><strong>Dishwasher<\/strong><\/a> is supplied via this filtered connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was important to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if we are already filtering water, we don't want to just filter the water from a small water tap and then continue to use the dishwasher with unfiltered tank water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then it would be better to have the entire kitchen connection receive filtered water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Therefore, even a small drinking water filter is not enough for us.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our research, we discovered that many classic under-the-counter filters are actually intended for a single drinking water tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, that would be too little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our filter must ultimately also provide enough water for the dishwasher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, in addition to the actual filter performance, what is most important for us is <strong>Flow rate and pressure loss<\/strong> Important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An interesting candidate that we have therefore considered is the <strong>Pentair Everpure FC-S Series<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the cartridge, flow rates of approximately 5.7 to 9.5 liters per minute, a filter fineness of up to 0.2 micrometers, and NSF\/ANSI certifications are specified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, we do not yet know whether this exact system will ultimately be installed here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because we don't just want to buy the most expensive or technically impressive filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We want to <strong>The right filter for our water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First, know what is in the water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s exactly why there\u2019s one more thing to consider before making the final purchase decision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>a water analysis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would like to know as accurately as possible how our water is actually composed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the things that are interesting to us in this context are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>TDS or salt content<\/li><li>Water hardness and limescale<\/li><li>Fluoride<\/li><li>Arsen<\/li><li>Nitrate<\/li><li>Heavy metals<\/li><li>Iron and manganese<\/li><li>and of course the microbiological contamination<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because only when we know what is actually in the water can we decide which filtration technology we actually need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps a combination of sediment and fine filters is sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps we need additional filter stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it will also turn out that certain things that we have been thinking about are not at all a problem for our water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would rather measure it than guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because we have now learned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t have to make things more complicated on the Baja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You just have to know, <strong>where your own needs lie \u2013 and find a reasonable solution in the right
